City Corporation response to Chancellor's Spending Review

Commenting on the Chancellor’s Spending Review, the City of London Corporation’s Policy Chair Catherine McGuinness said:

Brexit

“The Chancellor is right to accelerate preparations for Brexit as we draw close to 31 October.

“It’s vital that businesses – small and large – also make sure they are doing everything possible to prepare in case there is a no-deal Brexit.

“The worst impacts, however, can only be mitigated rather than avoided by preparation. A deal would still be the best outcome for businesses and households on both sides of the Channel.

“Despite the current uncertainty, London remains home to a unique combination of time zone, language, legal system, global talent, and financial services ecosystem. These fundamental strengths will underpin our long-term success.”

Infrastructure

“The Chancellor rightly called for an ‘infrastructure revolution’. Investment is needed in public transport right across the country, including the capital. The government should reaffirm their commitment to Crossrail 2 to reinforce London’s position as a world-renowned and accessible business centre.”

Trade

“The decision to extend the GREAT campaign is a positive signal to our global trading partners that the UK remains open. This is timely as we prepare to host our annual International Trade Dinner at Guildhall tomorrow.”
