Billingsgate Roman House and Baths - an iconic archaeological gem nestled in the heart of the City of London – has reopened for public tours after a seasonal closure.

Visitors can discover one of the capital’s most fascinating remains in an experience which offers a rare glimpse into Roman life.

The large private residence located in the basement of an office block on Lower Thames Street, was discovered in 1848 and can only be access via pre-booked tours. First built around A.D. 150, it was occupied right through to the end of Roman Londinium, in the early 5^th century A.D.

Preserved as if City archaeologists had just left the site and viewable from walkways a few metres off the ground, visitors can study the remains of the house’s walls and courtyard, as well as the cold room (frigidarium), warm room (tepidarium), and hot room (caldarium) of the baths.

Billingsgate Roman House and Baths is part of the City of London Corporation’s flagship Destination City programme, which sets out a vision for the Square Mile to become a world-leading leisure destination for the UK and international visitors, workers, and residents to enjoy.

Public tours take place on Saturdays until November. Tickets cost:

•           £12 per adult

•           £10 per child, 14 years old or under
