City Corporation responds to new three-tier lockdown system

The Prime Minister today set out further details of a three-tier system for local lockdown restrictions. Catherine McGuinness, Policy Chair at the City of London Corporation, said:

“We welcome the Prime Minister’s announcement of a new three-tier system, as well as his commitment to work with local leaders on these difficult but necessary measures.

“We urge all individuals and businesses to act responsibly by following restrictions in their area in order to slow the spread of the virus, save lives and protect the NHS. Public health must come first.

“However, livelihoods matter too. The virus is not going to go away quickly, so we need to find a way to live with it.

“Employers have dedicated considerable resources to deliver COVID-secure workplaces and to restore confidence among their staff. A blanket recommendation to work from home over any significant length of time risks stalling the capital’s recovery and damaging long-term competitiveness.

“So these restrictions should be regularly reviewed in light of the evidence. Hibernating through the winter is not an option for our economy.”
