Square Mile urged to shop safe to save lives
City residents and workers are being encouraged to be extra safe and vigilant this weekend to help save lives and jobs.
The City of London Corporation joined boroughs across the capital in the safety call, as London faces the threat of moving into Tier 3: Very High alert, with coronavirus cases rising.
This weekend is critical, with many London retailers and those in the hospitality sector experiencing high numbers of customers.
This has been a challenging year for the capital’s businesses and they need to keep trading. Without support from shoppers, some businesses many not survive.
City of London Corporation Policy Chair, Catherine McGuinness, said:
“There is a very real threat of entering tier 3, which would devastate businesses already struggling to make ends meet.
“Londoners must remember the three rules: Hands, Face, Space.
“If we all make an extra effort this weekend to halt the spread of COVID-19 we will help save lives and avoid tougher restrictions.
“Please remember to wear a mask on public transport, in shops, and when in restaurants, except when seated.
“Only by working together can we stop London being overwhelmed by COVID-19 and help rescue London’s businesses.”
The latest data shows that rates of coronavirus infection are on the rise in most London boroughs, including in people aged 60 and over who are most at risk of serious illness or death.
If cases continue to rise, the capital could be moved into Tier 3 with greater restrictions to protect residents from the virus - including closing bars, pubs, and restaurants except for takeaway, delivery and click and collect.
