Southwark Academy Celebrates Best GCSE Results in its History

The City of London Academy (Southwark) (CoLA) is celebrating an 12% increase on last year’s GCSE results, with best ever results of 68% of students achieving 5 A*-C grades including English and maths.

Overall 75% of students received 5 GCSEs grade A*-C, with great results in subjects including the essential core areas of Maths, English and Science. Notable student successes include Nadia Amani who received a clutch of 11 A*/A grades in Maths, English, Science French, Media Studies, Dutch, Religious Studies, Sociology and Statistics, to name only a few of the amazing results achieved. She plans to study four A Levels in CoLA Sixth Form Imade Remmouche and Rose Hemans also achieved 11 A*/A grades, Imade Remmouche with 10 A*/A Grades and Anthonia Edwoods, Daniel Torres and David Trieu achieving 9 A*/A grades.

A significant achievement was also recorded by Pupil Premium students, with 70% achieving 5 A*-C, including English and maths. 91% students made expected progress with English and 76% in Maths. This is significantly higher than reported last year. This is an outstanding achievement when compared to the national average for Pupil Premium.

Aspiring Basketball Academy student William Bassoumba was thrilled with his GCSE results, especially in his favourite subjects of Maths and Computer Science, where he gained two of his 8 A*/A grades. William is planning to join the Basketball Academy in CoLA Sixth Form and hopes to study Maths, Physics, Computer Science and Economics at A Level. William would like to choose between an apprenticeship in the City or pursue a Basketball Scholarship at a leading university. William attributed his outstanding success to the support given by his teachers and Intervention programmes in place at the Academy.

City of London Academy (Southwark) was opened in 2003 and serves one of the most deprived areas of Southwark, with around two thirds of its pupils eligible for Free School Meals. The Academy is sponsored by the City of London Corporation.

Our aim is to continue boosting the results year on year to provide our students with a clear path to further education and a bright future.”
