Recycle your unwanted items this January – for free!

The City of London Corporation is running a series of reuse and recycling events this January to help people get rid of unwanted electrical and household items for free.

The events are part of Keep Britain Tidy’s ‘Buy Nothing New Month’ and will help the City become a greener and more sustainable place in which to live, work, and visit.
Anyone can bring old or unused phones, computers, laptops and other electrical gadgets to any of the three ‘Tech-Takeback’ events between:

  • 10am and 3pm on Saturday 13 January at St Giles' Cripplegate Church, Fore Street, EC2Y 8DA
  • 10am and 5.30pm on Wednesday 17 January at Guildhall, North Wing, Basinghall Street, EC2V 5AE
  • 8.30am and 4pm on Thursday 18 January at Guildhall, North Wing, Basinghall Street, EC2V 5AE

Other accepted items include cameras, electrical cables, tablets, printers, scanners, hard drives, USBs and much more.

Tech-Takeback's team of dedicated IT and waste prevention experts make sure all data is securely erased from any items before they are recycled or given away to charities to benefit those who need it.

As well as electricals, there is also an opportunity for anyone to donate or take home any unwanted toys, clothes, shoes, books, and bric-a-brac at the first ‘Give and Take’ day of the year which will be combined with the Tech-Takeback on Saturday 13 January 2024.

The ‘give’ part of the event will take place between 10am and 12pm and is open to City residents, workers and visitors. The ‘take’ part will run between 1pm and 3pm with the first hour (1pm to 2pm) open to City residents only with proof of address.

Chair of the City of London Corporation’s Port Health & Environmental Services Committee, Mary Durcan, said:

“The New Year is a great time to reflect and have a good old sort out.

“We’re encouraging people to take a moment to think about whether there are any unwanted or broken items that could benefit from being recycled or donated to charity.

“Little things can make a big difference and events like these help our communities live more sustainably and benefit good causes.”
