New Chief Commoner elected for City

Members of the City of London Corporation have elected a new holder of one of the Square Mile’s oldest and most distinguished civic offices.

Deputy Deborah Oliver TD has been elected by fellow Members of the Court of Common Council – the City of London Corporation’s primary decision-making body – to serve as Chief Commoner.

The holder of the office, which dates back over 500 years, acts as a representative and ambassador for the Court of Common Council, supports Members in their duties and helps to uphold the traditions, standards and values of the City Corporation.

Deputy Oliver will succeed the current Chief Commoner, Philip Woodhouse, and will take up the post in spring 2027 for a one-year term.

City of London Corporation Chief Commoner Elect Deputy Deborah Oliver TD said:

“During my year of office I will focus on supporting Members, strengthening the effectiveness of the Court and ensuring every Member feels heard, respected and able to serve the City with confidence.

“My priorities will be to improve support and development for Members, bring colleagues together across committees and viewpoints and help them to deliver effectively for their wards, residents and businesses.”

Deputy Oliver is a City resident and has represented the City’s Aldersgate ward as a Common Councillor since 2022. She is a Member of the City of London Police Authority Board and chairs its Professionalism and Trust Committee. She is also chair of the Crime and Disorder Scrutiny Committee and a Member of the City Bridge Foundation Board.

Deborah is also a Liveryman and Past Master of the Worshipful Company of Communicators, a Liveryman of the Worshipful Company of Ironmongers, and a member of the Guild of Freemen.

In her professional life, Deputy Oliver has built a career in corporate communications, helping national organisations improve their influence and impact. Her experience spans sectors including legal services, health, regulation and government.

A former Colonel in the Army Reserve, she also brings extensive leadership experience from both public service and voluntary organisations.
