The City of London Corporation has given the green light to the redevelopment of a riverside office block which will establish new views to the River Thames and to St Paul’s Cathedral.

The Planning and Transportation Committee has approved plans to refurbish and extend Millennium Bridge House, a key gateway site for the City, while re-using the existing structure in a sustainable manner using Circular Economy and carbon reduction principles.

The scheme will introduce new roof terrace, which will be free to visit, offering exceptional views of the river, St Paul’s Cathedral and the City.

A roof level restaurant will also include a roof garden.

The scheme will further transform the building, which currently offers no public use, by introducing vibrant retail space to the riverside walk and Peter’s Hill.

Various public realm enhancements are also incorporated which are expected to greatly improve pedestrian flow in the area.

Alastair Moss, Chair of the Planning and Transportation Committee at the City of London Corporation, said:

“This development sensitively enhances a unique location that illustrates spectacular and contrasting City architecture – from the Baroque style St Paul’s Cathedral to the more modern Millennium Bridge.

“These plans for Millennium Bridge House are a fantastic example of the sustainable re-use of an existing structure, which is just one of the many ways the City Corporation encourages environmentally friendly building practice.

“Roof terraces have proven very popular in many City developments and it is fantastic that workers, residents and visitors alike are once again set to benefit from outstanding urban space being created in the Square Mile.”

The City Corporation has a commitment to world-class sustainable development and has included the key aim of more publicly accessible open space in the draft City Plan 2036.
