One of the Square Mile’s leading risk management and clearing experts has received the Freedom of the City of London today, in recognition of his outstanding contribution to the UK’s financial services sector.

Daniel Maguire, who is Group Head of LSEG’s Markets Division and CEO of LCH Group, was nominated by Lady Mayor of the City of London, Dame Susan Langley, and former Lord Mayor, Alastair King.

During a career spanning over 25 years, Daniel has been recognised for strengthening and stabilising the global reputation of the UK’s financial markets. He has focused his work on enhancing the resilience and transparency of the clearing and post-trade infrastructure that underpins the City of London, and ensuring that critical parts of the international derivatives market remain anchored in the UK. He has also championed efforts to reinforce London’s position as the most trusted and innovative financial centre.

In addition to his professional achievements, Daniel describes himself as a committed advocate for defence and the Armed Forces within the City, recognising their vital role in safeguarding national security and economic stability. He supports military units, service charities, and veteran employment initiatives, as well as promoting awareness of defence-related contributions to the financial sector.

Lady Mayor of the City of London, Dame Susan Langley, said:

“Drawing on senior leadership roles across the financial services sector in both the UK and the US, Daniel has played a significant role in strengthening London’s position as a leading global financial centre. Throughout his career, he has demonstrated a remarkable ability to navigate some of the industry’s most significant challenges with assurance and expertise. We are delighted to support Daniel’s nomination for the Freedom, and to welcome him and his guests to The Mansion House for this most distinctive of City ceremonies.”

Speaking after his Freedom ceremony, Daniel Maguire said:

“This is a very special moment for me and my family, and I am grateful to the Lady Mayor for hosting us at The Mansion House. The City lies at the heart of the UK’s global financial system, and this recognition reflects the collective effort to strengthen the resilience of the market infrastructure that keeps London a globally trusted centre.

“I am also immensely proud to support the vital link between the City and our Armed Forces, whose service underpins our national security and economic resilience.”

One of the City of London’s ancient traditions, the Freedom is believed to have begun in 1237 and enabled recipients to carry out their trade.

As well as being nominated for, or applying for, the Freedom, it is also offered by the City of London Corporation to individuals as a way of paying tribute to their outstanding contribution to London or public life, or to celebrate a very significant achievement.

Recent notable recipients include Academy Award-winning actor and humanitarian, Cate Blanchett; abstract artist and President of the Royal Academy of Arts, Rebecca Salter; one of the last surviving ‘Chindit’ soldiers, Sidney Machin; and mental health campaigner and former professional boxer, Frank Bruno.
