Pupils and staff at the City of London Academy Highgate Hill, in Islington, are celebrating after Ofsted inspectors rated its sixth form centre ‘Outstanding’. 

The school, part of the City of London Academies Trust, which runs the City of London Corporation’s sole sponsored academies, was visited by inspectors in May. 

Ofsted gave an overall rating of ‘Good’ to the school, across all five inspection areas – quality of education, behaviour and attitudes, personal development, leadership, and management. 

It is a remarkable turnaround for the academy, which was rated as ‘Requires Improvement’ by Ofsted in its previous inspection. 

Inspectors said: “Leaders have set high expectations for all pupils”, who “deepen their interests and widen their horizons”, with visits to universities “raising pupils’ aspirations”.

They said pupils, who are “safe and enjoy coming to school”, leave the academy “well prepared for their next stage in education, employment, or training.”

Ofsted reported: “…pupils behave well in lessons and conduct themselves sensibly around the school. They are taught to be kind to each other and to be respectful of the differences of others. They are encouraged to keep themselves physically and mentally healthy and to keep safe online.”

 The report highlighted that “pupils are introduced to various professions and careers options through the school’s personal, social, health and economic curriculum. In the sixth form, students benefit from an exceptional pastoral development programme that includes careers guidance, support, and advice.” 

 Headteacher Prince Gennuh, said:

The City Corporation sponsors ten high-performing academies across Hackney, Islington, Newham, and Southwark through the City of London Academies Trust. 

It is also the local education authority for one maintained primary school in the City of London, and the proprietor of four independent schools. 

Five out of the 10 City of London Academies Trust schools hold an ‘outstanding’ Ofsted rating, and two are rated ‘good’ with ‘outstanding features.
