Historic City building to undergo full external restoration

The City of London Corporation has announced that The Mansion House outside Bank junction will undergo a full external restoration.

Built in 1752 in the Palladian style by the surveyor and architect George Dance the Elder, The Mansion House is a Grade-1 listed building within the Bank Conservation Area.

Conservation works to the exterior of the building will see repairs, cleaning and the installation of a new energy efficient lighting system.

The project will improve the appearance and overall condition of the building and the City Corporation will commission architectural and lighting consultants to deliver the work.

The City of London Corporation aims to complete the project by October 2020.

Lord Mayor, Peter Estlin, said:

“This work will future-proof The Mansion House, improve its appearance and enhance this important historical Grade I-listed building.

“This unique building provides a spectacular setting for school visits, charity fundraising events, major conferences, business meetings, receptions and dinners.

“Over 50,000 people visit every year including cabinet ministers and heads of government from around the world. This restoration will ensure the building continues to play a leading role in UK public life and maintain its historical importance in the City.”

The Mansion House is the official residence of the Lord Mayor of London, the elected head of the City of London Corporation and a global ambassador for the UK financial and professional services industry.

The Lord Mayor acts as an international spokesperson for the City, leading business delegations overseas to key international markets on behalf of the UK’s financial and professional services industry.

Meeting government representatives from around the world, alongside business leaders and policy makers both at home and abroad, the Lord Mayor works to strengthen global economic ties with the UK, identify new business opportunities and promote the UK as a top global destination for foreign investment.
