Headteacher pays tribute to City of London Academy Islington students’ “fortitude and commitment” on GCSE results day

Students at City of London Academy Islington have been celebrating their GCSE results today, following months of virtual and in-person classes during the COVID pandemic.

The students achieved an 83% pass rate at grade 4 and above, and 61% at 5 and above in English. For Maths, the respective figures were 68% and 44%.

Some of the top performing students include:

Aki Chen (10 GCSEs) – six grade 9s, three grade 8s, and one grade 7

Chloe Sallaku (9 GCSEs) – six grade 9s, and three grade 8s

Selin Karaaslan (10 GCSEs) – three grade 9s, two grade 8s, four grade 7s, and one grade 6

Principal of City of London Academy Islington, Sonia Jacob, said:

“We are delighted by the excellent results achieved by our students, with the support of their teachers. Despite significant disruption to their studies owing to the pandemic, our students demonstrated fortitude, good humour, and commitment to their studies.

“We are looking forward to welcoming many of them to continue their education in the sixth form this autumn but, hopefully, with fewer disruptions to their studies than they have experienced in the last two years!”

Chair of the City of London Academies Trust Board, Tijs Broeke, said:

“The students at City of London Academy Islington should be delighted with their GCSE results today, not just because their hard work and determination has been reflected in their grades, but also for coping with the huge challenges presented by the COVID pandemic.

“My colleagues and I at the City of London Academies Trust Board send our warmest wishes and congratulations to the students, and our immense gratitude to the dedicated teaching staff.”
