Day of Bengali culture set to wow City visitors

A vibrant celebration of Bengali arts and culture will take place in the City of London this Sunday (September 26).

Mela in the City, which takes place in Aldgate Square, celebrates the community and diversity of the Square Mile.

The event is free and open to everyone, from noon until 5pm, with fantastic food, including south Asian street cooking.

There will also be music, dance and poetry performed by professional artists and community groups.

Performances will include music by folk band The RadhaRaman and singer Gouri Choudhury, dance by Taal Torongo and Showmi Dance Company, street theatre by Nutkhut, and much more.

Visitors can have a go at Bengali dancing and make a rangoli design, a popular folk art involving colourful floor designs.

Chair of the City of London Corporation’s Culture, Heritage and Libraries Committee, Wendy Hyde, said:

Mela in the City brings our whole community together to celebrate the Square Mile’s amazing spirit and diversity.

“Culture is playing a critical role as we bounce back from the pandemic and that’s why events like this are so important to Londoners.

“The City has got its buzz back and we’ll come together on Sunday to have fun and celebrate.”
