City of London launches public engagement to determine Square Mile’s future

The City of London Corporation has this week launched a public engagement phase on its main planning and transport development plans for the Square Mile.

Known as ‘City Plan 2040’ and the ‘Transport Strategy’ the proposals, subject to approval, will provide an overarching framework for future development in the Square Mile up to 2040, setting out the priorities for local residents, businesses, and open spaces.

The priorities include a clear vision for the approach to tall buildings, heritage and culture, housing and transportation, sustainability, as well as health and wellbeing.

A number of key areas across the city have also been identified to experience significant change over this period. These include:

  • Fleet Street and Ludgate;
  • Smithfield and Barbican;
  • Thames Riverside, Pool of London and Blackfriars;
  • The City Cluster and Liverpool Street; and
  • Aldgate, Tower and Portsoken.

There are several public engagement workshops taking place throughout June on these key topics and areas in the City Plan. Local residents, commuters, businesses and community groups have been invited to register their interest for these workshops and help the City Corporation shape the future planning policy across the Square Mile.

Chairman of the City of London Corporation’s Planning and Transportation Committee, Shravan Joshi, said:

“The City is home to a diverse range of communities and their involvement will be crucial in determining the future development of the Square Mile. I would like to encourage everyone who can attend these workshops, either in person or online, to do so.

“With the help of our residents and businesses, we will ensure that the City is the world’s most innovative, inclusive and sustainable business ecosystem, as well as an attractive place to invest, work, live, learn and visit.”
