City of London Corporation Policy Chair to explore partnership opportunities at Belt and Road Forum in Beijing

The City of London Corporation Policy Chair Catherine McGuinness is to visit China from 23 to 27 April 2019 to attend the 2nd Belt and Road Forum for International Cooperation.

The Policy Chair will attend a forum on financial connectivity alongside high-level speakers from across the world, including Minister Liu Kun from China’s Ministry of Finance, Governor Yi Gang of People's Bank of China and the Managing Director of the International Monetary Fund, Christine Lagarde.

In addition she will be attend a Belt and Road Bankers Roundtable and several bilateral meetings with regulators, government partners and other senior stakeholders.

The City of London Corporation has long worked to promote London and more broadly the UK as the ‘natural western hub’ of the Chinese-led Belt and Road Initiative (BRI), a development project which encompasses some one third of world trade and GDP and over 60 percent of the world's population. More than 100 countries and international organisations have signed up to the Initiative, and some $350 billion has already been committed to projects.

City of London Corporation Policy Chair Catherine McGuinness said:

“The UK has a real role to play in China’s Belt and Road Initiative, which by some estimates could be worth £1.8 billion annually to our economy.

“As an unrivalled hub for international infrastructure investment, British firms stand ready to provide much of the private financing required by the project, and can also support in green finance, consultancy, rule of law and foreign exchange.

“Seventy years on from the founding of the People’s Republic of China, ties between our two countries have gone from strength to strength, with bilateral trade now worth nearly £70 billion.

“I look forward to celebrating this long, fruitful relationship with our Chinese counterparts, and to marking the next chapter of our partnership in the Belt and Road.”

More than 30 Chinese financial firms are now based in the Square Mile, and the majority of major UK financial institutions have a presence in China. London remains the leading hub for RMB trading outside of Asia, and the City Corporation works alongside the People’s Bank of China to produce a quarterly review of use of the currency in the capital. In green finance, our countries continue to set the benchmark for international cooperation, and late last year the UK-China Green Finance Taskforce announced a set of green investment principles for the Belt and Road.
