City of London Corporation elects new Planning and Transportation Committee Chairman

The City of London Corporation has today (26 April) elected Shravan Joshi as its new Planning and Transportation Committee Chairman.

Joshi will now lead on all planning issues affecting the Square Mile including leading the discussion and debate on planning permissions for new developments in the City.

His role will also cover the City Corporation’s Transport Strategy and its responsibility as highway authority, ensuring that the City and its residents, workers and visitors enjoy safe streets and a world-class public transport system.

In his new role, Shravan Joshi is committed to ensuring the Square Mile remains a world-leading and sustainable place in which to do business, particularly as the recovery from the coronavirus pandemic continues to gather pace.

The City Corporation’s ambitious Climate Action Strategy will also take centre stage throughout his term with increasing global interest in the complex debate over new development versus retrofitting existing buildings.

Shravan Joshi will be responsible for the reshaping of the City Corporation’s City Plan 2040, which is currently being reconsidered to take into account the changing ways in which we use space.

Chairman of the City of London Corporation’s Planning and Transportation Committee, Shravan Joshi, said:

“I am grateful to have been trusted by elected Members with the stewardship of the Planning and Transportation Committee and I look forward to working inclusively and constructively with the Committee throughout my term as Chairman.

“I also look forward to working alongside the City’s unique blend of residents, workers, visitors, businesses, charities, courts and other civic institutions.

“We currently have a unique opportunity to shape the Square Mile’s built environment around the emergence from lockdown, while holding firm on delivery of our Climate Action and Transport Strategies.”

Shravan Joshi has served four years as an elected Member at the City Corporation and has held various positions including:

-        Deputy Chairman of the Licensing Committee

-        Deputy Chairman of the Streets and Walkways Sub-Committee

-        Deputy Chairman of the Property Investment Board

-        He is also a Member of the Policy and Resources Committee and Resource Allocation Sub-Committee.

Joshi started his career in investment banking but moved to the energy sector in 1999. He specialised in trade structuring and supply chain contracts into Central Asia, Eastern Europe, the Far East and North America.

He has worked with several new energy technology companies, and he advises and consults on commercialisation of new innovations and solutions.

Shravan Joshi is replacing Alastair Moss who has served his full three-year term as Chair of the Committee and who will now serve as Deputy Chair for the next 12-months.
