John Fletcher, who has represented the Portsoken Ward on the eastern fringes of the Square Mile since 2011, has become the new Chairman of the City of London Corporation’s Licensing Committee.

In his new role, he will ensure that the committee exercises the City Corporation’s local authority licensing function under the Licensing Act 2003.

As such, it is responsible for licensing premises for the sale of alcohol by retail; the supply of alcohol in club premises; and the provision of regulated entertainment and late night refreshment.

The licensing authority must carry out its licensing functions, including all actions and decisions, with a view to promoting the following four objectives: the prevention of crime and disorder; public safety; the prevention of public nuisance; and the protection of children from harm.

The Square Mile has a flourishing hospitality sector and night-time economy, which is vital to the City and wider London’s competitiveness.

The City is home to 960 licensed premises, with over 160 pubs, cafés, bars, and restaurants offering al fresco seating, all of which contribute towards boosting the City’s vibrancy.

Commenting on his election, John Fletcher said:

“I am very proud to take over this well-run committee, thanks in no small part to my predecessor, James Tumbridge, who, I am pleased to say, will serve as Deputy Chair for the following year.

“I look forward to working with the Committee’s Members, representatives from the City of London Police, and City Corporation Officers on how to balance the ambitions of the City Corporation’s growth strategy, Destination City, with our residents’ expectations for a safe environment and a peaceful night's rest.”

Destination City, the City Corporation’s growth strategy for the Square Mile, is focused on attracting businesses, workers, and visitors to the City, who benefit from accessible, clean, and safe streets, and can enjoy its first-class cultural, heritage, and hospitality offer.

With a target to increase average footfall into the City on Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays by 5% year-on-year, Destination City is instrumental in ensuring that the City continues to play a leading role in driving London’s and UK’s economy.  

The City Corporation has been making radical changes to the Square Mile’s streets, with wider pavements to accommodate al fresco seating, and first class infrastructure for pedestrians and cyclists.
