City of London Corporation appoints interim Chief Planning Officer

The City of London Corporation has appointed Gwyn Richards as interim Chief Planning Officer.

Gwyn has over 25 years of experience in central London authorities and is currently the Assistant Director of Design at the City of London Corporation.

He has led or been involved in every tower and major development scheme in the Square Mile over the past 10 years.

His time at the City Corporation has given him specialist knowledge of the City’s unique built environment.

In his new role, Gwyn will lead the Development Management team of 40 - including planning, design, conservation, archaeology and transport officers. The team is responsible for managing and promoting development while also safeguarding the historic environment.

Annie Hampson OBE retires as Chief Planning Officer in March 2020, at which point Gwyn Richards will take the post on an interim basis.

Alastair Moss, Chair of the Planning and Transportation Committee at the City of London Corporation, said:

“We are delighted that Gwyn has been appointed as our interim Chief Planning Officer. He has already played a key part in the planning of many iconic developments in the City and is well respected across the industry.

“Gwyn’s expertise will help us transition smoothly following Annie’s retirement next month. He will now lead a strong and experienced team that will help to shape the future of the Square Mile.”

Gwyn Richards said:

“Over the past decade I have been committed in ensuring that planning in the City is radical, forward-looking and proactive. This is essential to ensure the City is a successful and inclusive place for all.

“I look forward to continuing to deliver a sustainable, cleaner and greener City that is safe, vibrant and adaptable to maintain its international standing and relevance to London’s wonderfully diverse communities.

“We all face challenging times and planning in the City needs to adapt to find radical solutions for the greater good. We have a strong and dynamic team who are up to the task.”

John Barradell, Town Clerk and Chief Executive Officer of the City of London Corporation, said:

“I would like to thank Gwyn for stepping into the role of interim Chief Planning Officer following Annie’s retirement. Gwyn brings a wealth of experience, knowledge and ambition to the role.

“I look forward to working with Gwyn and the Development Team as we seek to achieve our vision for the City.”
