City of London Academy Islington posts its best ever GCSE results

The City of London Academy Islington has posted its best ever GCSE exam results - after introducing major changes in the way the school is run.

In the ‘5 A*-C’ including  English and Maths category – the key indicator of a school’s success – results rose to  61% - from 33% last year. This result is particularly significant given that UK data this year shows that there has been a drop in the proportion of GCSE exam entries awarded these top grades, for the second year in a row. The school’s overall A*-C pass rates are also up to 80% from 67% in 2012 – a rise of 13%.

The Academy achieved a ‘Good’ Ofsted report in its latest inspection in November 2012. The report recognised the Academy as ‘rapidly improving’ with ‘inspirational leadership’ and these examination results demonstrate further evidence of a major improvement in teaching and learning on offer at the school.

I am absolutely delighted for our Year 11 students who have all achieved exceptional examination success today. Their high academic achievement is the result of hard work throughout the year, following significant changes within the Academy to raise standards. Our significant improvement in results reflects our aspiration and determination for outstanding student success, which is shared by all at the Academy and I am exceptionally proud of both students and staff here at the Academy.

Many congratulations to the students, Principal and staff at the Academy. They have put in an exceptional performance, surpassing an ambitious target we set for a 55% pass-rate. The Board of Governors is thrilled. It is a great outcome for the students’ hard work - the guidance, support and input of the staff - and for the significant changes delivered by the Academy throughout the year.

This year, the Academy also posted its best A-level results since it began teaching the courses in 2010. It saw a dramatic improvement in scores, achieving a 97% A2 pass rate and improving on its A*-C results from 65% last year to 85% this year.

Results in Maths and Physics were particularly strong – with a 100% pass rate in the A*-C category.  The school also attained a 100% pass rate in its vocational courses, with the majority of students securing university places.
