City Figure Recognised in His Majesty The King’s Birthday Honours
Alderman Alastair King, the former Lord Mayor of the City of London, has been awarded a Knighthood in His Majesty The King’s Birthday Honours List for services to pensions reform, the promotion of international business, and voluntary and charitable service.
During his mayoralty, Sir Alastair played a leading role in advancing the Mansion House Accord and delivering a comprehensive programme of international engagement to promote the UK’s financial, professional services, legal and maritime sector.
Jointly led by the Association of British Insurers (ABI), the Pensions and Lifetime Savings Association (PLSA) and the City of London Corporation, the Accord harnesses the higher potential net returns for defined contribution default funds available in private markets. The Accord also offers investment support for UK businesses as well as driving funds into major infrastructure projects and clean energy developments. Total pension assets currently in scope amount to £252 billion.
Sir Alastair's work also spanned a wide range of initiatives, including support for the Armed Forces and defence industries, championing the contribution of minority communities, and sustained charitable and public service.
Simon Duckworth, a member of the City of London Corporation, has also been awarded a military CBE for his conspicuous and sustained contribution to the Armed Services.
Alderman Sir Alastair King, said:
“I am deeply honoured to receive this recognition. It has been a privilege to serve the City of London. Throughout my time as Lord Mayor, I have been proud to champion the UK’s financial, professional services, legal and maritime sector at home and abroad, helping to strengthen our global competitiveness and promote long-term investment through initiatives such as the Mansion House Accord.”
“This honour reflects the collective efforts of many individuals and organisations committed to driving positive change, from improving pension outcomes for savers to supporting our Armed Forces and widening opportunity to all no matter their background. I remain committed to supporting the continued success of the City and the UK as a leading international financial centre.”
