The City of London Corporation is welcoming the positive steps that will enable more international business travel and provide a boost to the economy.

The Government’s review of “travel corridor” arrangements last week provided for a new travel exemption for business travellers who will deliver significant economic benefit to the UK.

Those who qualify for the travel exemption will no longer be required to self-isolate when travelling to the UK from non-exempt countries. Details on eligibility are set out here.

Policy Chair at the City of London Corporation, Catherine McGuinness, said:

“We welcome the Government’s decision to enable international travel for the many who need to do so for business purposes.

“Getting business travel back off the ground is vital for the economy in London and the rest of the UK.

“The new international travel exemption shows the Government recognises the significance of doing face to face business safely, which is why we are once again urging a review of the blanket recommendation to work from home.

“A central office provides benefits for staff development, team morale, networking and so much more. Therefore, we are asking the Government to recognise the steps that have been taken to enable office workers to travel and work safely from COVID-secure offices.”

Chair of the Planning and Transportation Committee at the City of London Corporation, Alastair Moss, said:

“This is positive news for businesspeople across those sectors which rely on global connections in order to thrive.

“International trade will be vital to driving the economic recovery from COVID-19 forward, so we welcome this pragmatic business travel exemption from the Government.”
