City Corporation urges Government to set out detailed plan for recovery

The government is expected to publish a ‘roadmap’ out of the National Lockdown on February 22 2021. Ahead of the announcement, City of London Corporation Policy Chair Catherine McGuinness said:

“With the vaccination rollout now moving at pace, we urge the Government to set out a detailed plan outlining how the economy can be safely reopened in order to recover from the pandemic.

“We are in the deepest recession for 300 years, and
urgently need to get as much of the economy operating as possible to protect livelihoods and help pay for the vast amount of support handed out over the last twelve months.

“Employers have dedicated considerable resources to deliver COVID-secure workplaces and to restore confidence among their staff, many of whom are eager to return to their place of work. A blanket recommendation to work from home into the Summer risks stalling the capital’s recovery and damaging long-term competitiveness.

“The City stands ready to welcome workers back when it is safe to do so. In the meantime we urge Londoners to continue to act responsibly by complying with the new rules in order to reduce transmission, save lives and protect the NHS.”
