The City of London Cemetery and Crematorium is inviting proposals for the provision of its on-site café for visitors and mourners - as the current lease term is ending.

The Cemetery is one of the largest in Europe and receives nearly half a million visitors a year.

The City of London Corporation puts providing a first-class service at the City of London Cemetery café at the top of its list of priorities.

A condition will be to fully refurbish the café.

A café has been operating on the site for almost 20 years. The City Corporation is now retendering in line with standard procedures as the current 5 year lease term is coming to an end. The lease and operation of the Gatehouse café is offered for the period from 11 October 2021 to 31 January 2027.

The Café is located near the entrance, within the grounds of the City of London Cemetery and Crematorium which is a Grade I listed landscape in the heart of East London that has been open since 1856. The 200-acre site provides a picturesque, safe, parkland atmosphere and offers formal gardens, well maintained roadways, tree lined avenues and local heritage.

The cemetery is located in the London Borough of Newham, opposite Wanstead Flats and is a short walk from Manor Park railway station.

Chairman of the City of London Corporation’s Port Heath and Environmental Services Committee, Keith Bottomley, said:

“We value passion about meeting the needs of the Cemetery’s visitors and mourners, offering good quality refreshments in a warm and inviting environment.

“The City Corporation wants to provide the absolute best service possible at this site and look forward to seeing imaginative proposals.”

Amongst the famous people buried at the Cemetery are Sir Robert Hooke, Bobby Moore and two of the Jack the Ripper victims.The Cemetery Site is a Grade I listed landscape and there are eight Grade II listed buildings within the site.

The Cemetery & Crematorium is visited by nearly half a million people throughout the year, as well as a similar number of people attending the 3,500 funeral services each year. Over one million people have been buried or cremated at the site.
